Rusty Thomas on Topiaries

This weekend at the Market, in addition to featuring ‘quick-grab’ hostess gifts of potted red amaryllis and tole cachepot with greenery and winterberry, Rusty Thomas has added gorgeous topiary to the mix.

In America in the 50’s and 60’s, the late Bunny Mellon inadvertently made topiary the chic go-to-standard for high society,” he says. “There were several prominent plantsmen who took notice and became experts of the craft. I discovered them all in the 1980’s and used them as a staple of my work at the Carlyle Hotel which is where Nancy Reagan took notice. She became a devote of the process. I was so happy when Christie’s did the film on her house because at the beginning you see a triple-tier myrtle of which I have a pair at the Market.”

You can view the video here.

Here are some of the items Rusty will have at the market through Christmas weekend.

Check out the beautiful holiday decor at the Market by renowned event designer Rusty Thomas

This year the market has been decorated for the Holidays by Rusty Thomas, a renowned event designer whose long-lists of credits include the ‘1992’ Democratic National Convention, and the legendary Hotel Carlyle where he catered to legendary last names: Rockefeller, Vanderbilt, Astor, and Kennedy. He’s also worked extensively with 3 former First Ladies; Nancy Reagan, Hillary Clinton, and Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis. He and Nancy collaborated for 27 years on topiary, right up to her death.

His vision for the Market was simple. Simple! Old fashioned local… but with the elegance of abundance with the occasional sparkle.

In addition to this stunning work, Rusty will also be selling hostess gifts such as potted amaryllis, holiday napkin rings and holiday greens in tole cache pots for you to add to your own home holiday decor.
