This weekend at the Market, in addition to featuring ‘quick-grab’ hostess gifts of potted red amaryllis and tole cachepot with greenery and winterberry, Rusty Thomas has added gorgeous topiary to the mix.
In America in the 50’s and 60’s, the late Bunny Mellon inadvertently made topiary the chic go-to-standard for high society,” he says. “There were several prominent plantsmen who took notice and became experts of the craft. I discovered them all in the 1980’s and used them as a staple of my work at the Carlyle Hotel which is where Nancy Reagan took notice. She became a devote of the process. I was so happy when Christie’s did the film on her house because at the beginning you see a triple-tier myrtle of which I have a pair at the Market.”
